1. Material Costs:
  • Steel Types: Different types of steel (carbon steel, stainless steel, alloy steel, etc.) have different costs.
  • Weight: Steel is often priced by weight, so the estimator needs to calculate the total weight of the material required for the project. This includes beams, columns, plates, and other fabricated components.
  • Material Waste: It’s important to factor in material waste, which can occur during cutting, welding, or fabrication.
2. Labour Costs:
  • Skilled Labour: Steel fabrication requires skilled workers, such as welders, fitters, and machinists. Labour costs depend on the skill level and hourly rates for these workers.
  • Time for Fabrication: Estimating the time required for various stages, such as cutting, welding, and assembly, is essential. The complexity of the design and the size of the project will affect this.
3. Shop and Field Labour:
  • Shop Labour: Labour involved in the actual fabrication process inside the shop, such as cutting, welding, and assembling steel components.
  • Field Labour: Labour for installing and erecting fabricated steel structures on-site. This can include crane operators, riggers, and other workers.
4. Equipment Costs:
  • Machinery & Tools: Costs for equipment used in the fabrication process (e.g., plasma cutters, welding machines, cranes, etc.).
  • Rental Equipment: If any machinery or equipment needs to be rented, those costs should be included in the estimate.
5. Overhead Costs:
  • Factory Overheads: This can include the cost of utilities, rent, insurance, and other operational costs of the fabrication facility.
  • Project Management Costs: Time spent on project management, coordination, and supervision, both in the shop and at the job site.
6. Transportation and Delivery:
  • Shipping Costs: If materials or fabricated components need to be transported from one location to another, shipping costs should be estimated.
  • Delivery to Site: The cost of delivering the fabricated steel components to the construction site, including crane costs and site-specific delivery considerations.
7. Contingency:
  • Contingency Costs: These are reserved for unforeseen issues or changes in the scope of the project. A percentage of the total cost is often added as a contingency to account for unexpected costs.
8. Blueprints and Plans:
  • The estimator uses the project’s blueprints or detailed drawings to calculate the quantities and sizes of steel materials needed. These plans help in estimating the total weight and dimensions of fabricated steel components.
9. Profit Margin:
  • A profit margin needs to be added to the final estimate to ensure the business is compensated for its efforts. This margin will depend on the company’s desired profit and market competition.
